Senior Drilling Engineer and Software Development Lead at Merlin
Role
Michal is a senior drilling engineer at Merlin with responsibility for software development and he has been with the Merlin team since 2019. Currently Michal’s main focus is leading the Merlin software development team through the final stages of Merlin’s torque, drag and hydraulics software upgrade and transition to a cloud hosted package. He also continues to keep his hand in with drilling engineering projects, often taking on the more complex drilling problem reviews. Michal is a versatile engineer who has recently delivered training and rig site based drilling operations support.
Background
Michal’s first drilling engineering role was in Austria with RHOEL Aufsuchungs AG. Since then he has worked in staff positions internationally for BNK, ConocoPhillips, Shell, and Baker Hughes. Michal moved into the software development lead position several years ago and since then he has led bespoke software development projects, initially doing everything from recruiting software developers to research and development and even coding himself. He is proficient at coding in several different languages.
Expertise
First and foremost, Michal is a Senior Drilling Engineer with extensive and varied experience that allows him to add value to all ERD feasibility or well design reviews he completes. His main areas of expertise are ERD well engineering and associated drilling modelling, drilling software development (torque, drag and hydraulics), coding, training (ERD and stuck pipe prevention), drilling optimisation and drilling problem event investigations.
Interests
Michal enjoys cycling, riding his motorbike and music.
