Background
Iain joined Merlin as the Engineering Manager in 2013, prior to moving back to Australia in 2016 to take on his current role. Prior to Merlin, he worked 3 years for NOV and 22 years for Schlumberger Drilling & Measurements, starting as a Mud Logger with Anadrill, through MWD, then Directional Driller, with his final role as Engineering Manager for the Australasian Geomarket.
Expertise
Iain’s main area of expertise is the drilling of complex and high angle wells. He thrives on the challenge of drilling the “impossible well” and enjoys passing on his knowledge to drilling teams, both in town and at the rig site. Career highlights are numerous but include the longest land well in Australia, the longest lateral in granite, drilling a 7:1 shallow TVD ERD multi-lateral well and running SLB services for the Montara relief well.
Interests
Used to be listed as hunting out the best Guinness in the world outside of his country of birth, but these days it’s more like enjoying a good glass of red wine and the company of friends and family. Can play some very bad golf and enjoys watching most sports and going to concerts, when timing permits. Currently, a lot of his spare time is taken up as President of a local swimming club – anybody who fills a voluntary position in a sports club knows what that is all about.
