Role
Callum is the Engineering Lead at Merlin which involves carrying out engineering studies, problem reviews and guiding the engineering team on the most complex projects and technologies. He developed the Merlin approach to root cause analysis and is currently leading a project to update Merlin's stuck pipe prevention training materials.
Background
Callum joined Merlin in 2023 after working for many operators globally. Callum started in the oil and gas industry as a drilling engineer in Australia where he was involved in various complex HPHT and ERD projects. In 2013, he moved to Europe (Scotland since 2014) and carried out contracts with several deepwater operators around Africa and South America as an Operations Drilling Engineer. Projects included production wells with challenging laterals as well as HPHT exploration. Most recently, he was working for Cairn / Capricorn in Edinburgh as the Senior Drilling Engineer on their North Sea wells. Prior to drilling engineering, Callum was the Technical Director for UWA Motorsport, leading the team to winning the Formula SAE (Formula Student) world championship in the USA.

Callum’s main areas of expertise are drilling engineering and operations for complex wells. He is particularly interested in complex problem solving and achieving world class performance on the most challenging projects.
Interests
Callum enjoys motorsport (particularly formula 1), mountain biking, running and other sports. He has completed a marathon and many triathlons in Australia and taken on several enduro mountain bike races around Scotland.
