Course Introduction:

This programme is designed for people in critical well control positions on drilling installations as well as onshore roles.   Level 3  course is designed for anyone expected to shut-in a well in case of unintended or unexpected flow, such as drillers and assistant drillers.  Level 4 is designed for Wellsite Supervisory and office-based personnel that are primarily involved with the well design and operational decision making process and those involved with potential well kill methodology.

This course is designed to meet the requirements of IWCF and can be completed with either Surface or Combined BOP Certification. IWCF training levels 2 to 4 are designed to be sequential and first-time candidates are expected to complete Level 2 before progressing to Level 3. However, the training levels are also designed to be role-specific and dependent on the candidate’s work experience. Course Objectives:

To be able to:

  • Show the principles and procedures used in well control operations with surface or subsea BOP stack as described in the IWCF
  • Use the equipment for well control operations with surface or subsea BOP stack as described in the IWCF Well Control Level Course Syllubus – available for download via Programme Structure – http://www.iwcf.org/programmes/drilling-well-control
  • Show that a well control situation can be mastered by use of simulator according to IWCF standards
  • Obtain sufficient knowledge about the course content to pass three written tests with minimum 70% score

Course Delivery/Examinations:

Aberdeen Well Control provides weekly courses held at our training centre based in Bucksburn, Aberdeen  – duration of the course is 5 days beginning Monday of each week.

Level 3 and 4 training – Consists of two written assessments and a practical assessment using simulator equipment. If passed, the certificate is valid for 2 years.

To pass the assessment and obtain a certificate, candidates must achieve a minimum mark of 70% in each section of the examination.

Each candidate is required to complete two written test papers which include multiple choice questions and Kill Sheet calculations. All candidates are allowed between 1.5 and 2.5 hours to complete this section, depending on the options taken.

The examinations are made up of multiple choice problem questions. Candidates must be able to identify equipment components and operating procedures using diagrams and schematics. All candidates are allowed one hour to complete this section.

Candidates undertaking a Level 3 or 4 course will also undergo a practical assessment. Assessment is usually conducted in pairs of a driller level candidate and a supervisor level candidate.

Candidates must:

  • Set up for drilling
  • Recognise a drilling break and positive kick
  • Perform the shut-in within the shortest possible time in accordance with the appropriate procedure
  • Complete the kill sheet and kill the well using the designated procedure (Wait & Weight or Driller’s Method)
  • Bring the pump up to kill speed maintaining constant bottom hole pressure
  • Operate the remote choke and make adjustments in accordance with the time delay to maintain constant bottom hole pressure
  • Complete the well kill operation
